“Quincy Irving is no longer a suspect,” announced Vivian Thomas-Bronson, the editor of the Palmchat Gazette, a formidable foreign war correspondent who possessed beauty, brains, and a cutthroat approach to journalism, ensuring that the paper was always first to break a big story.

And Detective Janvier dropping the charges against his main suspect was a huge story with far-reaching consequences.

“Are you serious?” asked Beanie, taking a sip of his first cup of coffee of the day.

He’d just made the java and returned to his tiny cubicle to start the morning’s tasks when Vivian called him to her office.

“I just spoke with my sources,” said Vivian, turning to her computer.

“What did you find out?” asked Beanie, vaguely wondering about the identity of her source at the St. Killian police department. She’d never revealed the person or even given the barest hint at who it might be, though Beanie suspected it was Detective Baxter François, one of the famed François detectives, a quintet of brothers who were clever and cunning.

Detective François and Vivian had worked together on a dangerous case once, and Beanie surmised that a bond between them had been formed.

“Apparently,” said Vivian, her fingers flying over the keyboard as she multi-tasked, checking emails as she talked with him. “Irving has an alibi for the night Saul was stabbed.”

“Interesting,” said Beanie, stroking his chin. “Last time I talked to Fields, he said Irving refused to tell the police where he was on the night in question.”

“Well, there’s a reason for that,” said Vivian, glancing at him, her mouth twisted in a wry smirk. “Irving didn’t want to tell the police that on New Year’s Eve, he was at a low-rent casino in Little Turkey.”

“That actually makes sense,” said Beanie, reminding Vivian that Lime Shoes had revealed Quincy Irving’s gambling problem.

“Video surveillance showed Irving entering the casino around eleven p.m.,” said Vivian, focusing on her emails again. “He didn’t leave until around seven a.m. the next morning.”

After another sip of coffee, Beanie said, “From the camera surveillance and CCTV footage Janvier reviewed, the cops determined Saul was stabbed between three-thirty and six a.m.”

“Which means Irving couldn’t have stabbed Saul,” said Vivian. “The casino may be in Little Turkey but the security is robust. There’s no way Irving could have sneaked out of the place without being caught on camera.”

Beanie shook his head. “I don’t understand that guy. Why not just tell the police that from the beginning? He might have avoided the charges.”

“Well, the attempted murder for his stunt in the ICU is still standing, for now,” said Vivian. “But my source thinks that will be dropped, too, because the evidence is circumstantial and inconclusive. Did the nurse really see Irving trying to smother Saul or did she think that’s what she saw?”

“Right,” said Beanie, though he personally thought the ICU attempted murder should stick.

Vivian said, “Anyway, Irving was reluctant to reveal his alibi because he walked out of the casino stumbling and hungover with two scantily clad women draped all over him.”

Scoffing, Beanie said, “No wonder he stayed quiet.
